The Memoria Project is an endeavor to create a
lasting tribute to the victims and survivors of September 11th
and to enrich all who come into contact with it in the process.
In early 2002, community members from Monmouth County, NJ (which
lost 146 persons in the terrorist attacks) formed a non-profit
group to oversee the creation of a commemorative stone
sculpture. The process of the sculpture was made accessible to
the public that summer on Sandy Hook, Gateway National
Recreational Area.
From June through August, as thousands looked on and surviving
family members assisted, two 13-foot marble statues were
sculpted to form the memorial’s centerpiece. Additional
enrichment programs were offered through 37 free educational
events held on-site. From stone carving workshops to sand
sculpture contests, clay modeling demos to lectures on
Renaissance masters, the fascinating art of sculpture was
brought to Monmouth County.
The centerpiece statues are complete and on display at
Veteran's Memorial Park in
Highlands, NJ. The second phase of the project, which
involves the engraving of all victims' names onto five large
granite stones, is currently taking place at an advanced stone
facility in Vermont. This process will be completed in the
upcoming months.
The Memoria Project is currently working with the Borough of
Highlands to finalize permanent installation at Veteran's
Memorial Park. |
