Forging
Memorial Art for
Public Memory
Symposium and Exhibition
Speakers: 1:00 pm,
at Alexander Library
Exhibition opening and reception: 5:00 pm at Art Library
Friday, Sept. 12, 2003
Artists face unique challenges
when they work to conceive memorials that respectfully, yet
creatively, reflect communal reactions to public tragedies.
The Art Library and the Rutgers Art History Department will
conduct a one-day event that analyzes the issues from a
variety of perspectives and highlights some recent works of
memorial art that successfully addressed these challenges.
Speakers will include Dr. Meredith Bzdak, Ford Farewell Mills
and Gatsch Architects; Dr. Margaret Kuntz, Drew University;
Stephen Shaheen, Memoria Project; Carol Sterling, who has
served with the International Sculpture Center; and Evan
Urbania, Memoria Project, who will discuss the conception of
public and memorial art as social representations of
collective memory.
An accompanying exhibition will showcase New Jersey artists,
such as David Slivka, Roberta Scott, Stephen Shaheen, Franco
Minervini, Patrick Morelli, and John Giannotti, whose work has
responded to the events of September 11, 2001.
To RSVP, send an email

Forum at Rutgers University |
|

Press Release |
On September 12th, Executive Director Evan Urbania and Artist Stephen
Shaheen will be speaking on the subject of creating a community-involved
memorial in response to the events of September 11th, 2001.
The afternoon will consist of a series of lectures at the Alexander
Library, detailing public and memorial art with a visual presentation of
memorials created throughout the state in response to 9/11. Several
educators and art historians will present two brief lectures. This first
section will conclude with a detailed discussion by Memoria Project
Executive Director Evan Urbania and Artist Stephen Shaheen. Both men will
discuss the process of creating a successful memorial in response to a
tragedy, and will chart the development of the Memoria Project sculptures,
which were realized through the coming together of a community in a time
of need.
Artist Stephen Shaheen will present the original Memoria Project models,
which are large half-size plaster works used to create the centerpiece
sculptures. These pieces, along with many other artifacts and drawings
will be on display through September. Mr. Shaheen will discuss the
artistic aspects and challenges of the project, while Evan Urbania will
discuss the successes and challenges the organization faced, including
conception, incorporation, fundraising, public relations and future plans.
At 5:00PM, Rutgers University Art Library will open to receive guests and
present an exhibition of models, objects, photo montages, and images
compiled and collected by individuals, communities and organizations in
New Jersey. Many of those responsible for the works will be present and
eager to discuss their representations with guests. Refreshments will be
served.
Please consider attending this special event. Admission is free.
