A NEW WORLD WITH AN ANCIENT EYE: ITALIAN SCULPTURE – A SIX PART
SERIES
Piergiacomo Petrioli, PhD.
The rediscovery of classical art in Italy was a fundamental step
in the development of Western art. Focusing on this theme,
renowned Italian Art Historian Piergiacomo Petrioli will explore
the relationships between ancient art traditions and Italian
sculpture since the Middle Ages. Nicola Pisano, Donatello,
Michelangelo, Bernini, and Tito Sarrocchi are among the many
master artists that will be discussed.
CELEBRATING
NEW YORK CITY THROUGH ART
Joan Lipton, Ph.D
In an extensive slide-illustrated talk, Dr. Joan Lipton, a
frequent lecturer in the area, will highlight the different
sections of this great city via photographs, paintings and
sculpture by American artists. Views of today will be contrasted
with the “time of the skyscrapers” at the beginning of the 20th
century when New York City was the Mecca that attracted both
Realist and Impressionist painters. Viewers will see how both
groups of artists differed as they observed and painted the
growing metropolis. In addition, modern artists will be included
in this exciting survey.
LINCOLN MEMORIAL CARVERS: THE PICCIRILLI BROTHERS
William Caroll, Mary Shelly & Jerry Napa
Six Italian-American brothers, working in their Bronx, New York
studio, sculpted some of the countries best known public
sculptures from 1893 until 1945. Their works include the Lincoln
Memorial in Washington DC, The New York Library Lions and the
New York City Washington Arch. A slide presentation and
discussion by scholars William Caroll and Mary Shelly will
highlight the accomplishments of these fascinating sculptors.
Jerry Napa, a longtime friend of Attilio Piccirilli, will share
personal anecdotes.
WASHINGTON D.C. CATHEDRAL STONE CARVERS: Film and Discussion
Franco Minervini
Master carver Franco Minervini will share his experience of
carving at the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. A short,
Academy Award-winning documentary about Minervini’s artisan
colleagues will be shown.
TRAVELING THROUGH SACRED SPACES OF HINDUISM
Suzanne Parmly
Suzanne Parmly, artist, educator and traveler, has made many
trips to India and Nepal in an effort to understand the culture
of sacred spaces. During her thirty years of teaching at
Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School, Suzanne has tried to
impart her love of culture and connections through the world of
art to her students. This slide lecture will focus on Hinduism
in India and Nepal. Experience Varanasi in India; the Holy City
of the Hindus, The Caves of Ellora, a festival at Puri and
temples in the Katmandu Valley in Nepal.
STONES OF ITALY
Piergiacomo Petrioli, Ph.D
Created for the art lover, this basic slide presentation travels
through Italian sculpture from the Middle Ages to the modern
era, focusing on the technical skills, methods and themes of the
most important Italian sculptors: Michelangelo, Bernini and
Canova, to name a few.

SCULPTURE
Mark Fredenburg
Mark Fredenburg, resident stone sculptor at Grounds for
Sculpture in Mercerille, NJ, will present a lecture and slide
presentation on 20th Century stone sculpture through the eyes of
an artist. In addition, he will discuss the latest technology
used to create sculpture such as laser-scanning, computer
modeling and power tools.
TRAVELING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF BUDDISM THROUGH ART AND
ARCHITECTURE
Suzanne Parmly
Visit Sarnath, India where Siddhartha Gautama preached his first
sermon. Travel through Buddhist sites in Ladakh, Tibet and
Nepal. The art of southern Asia is vibrant and surprising,
utilizing a great array of media and filled with forms and
themes that differ from familiar Western art traditions. Suzanne
Parmly, artist, educator and traveler will present images of
Buddhist art and architecture in India, Nepal and Tibet
A DISCUSSION OF ZIMBABWE
Maureen Bagley
Maureen Bagley of Afridesia Gallery in Red Bank, will present a
discussion and pictorial exploration of the Zimbabwe Peoples'
major contribution to the contemporary art scene. This
relatively young art form, which introduces new ideas to the
world of art lovers, combines deep cultural beliefs with
artistic brilliance.
WORKSHOPS
STONE WORKSHOP
Sharon Gainsburg / Ray Licata
A comprehensive view of the origins of stone and its use in the
creation of sculpture. Modeling and carving will be
demonstrated. Guided by established New Jersey sculptor and
teacher Sharon Gainsburg, and experience stone-carver Ray
Licata, participants will enjoy a hands-on stone carving
experience that introduces them to the world of stone sculpture.
CLAY MODELING WORKSHOP
Giorgio Atzori
This established New Jersey Sculptor who has assisted in the
preparation of the enlargements for the Memoria Project will
demonstrate the preparatory stages of creating a monument.
Preparing a model’s armature on a turntable, the forming of an
actual clay sculpture, and its casting in plaster will be
demonstrated and discussed to convey an understanding of the
creative process and technical methods used today.
MAKING PEACE FOR KIDS
Constance Gryczka
Introduce a child to the magical world of sculpture! Come see
the stone carvers and watch them create works in marble. Learn
about the different types of stone and their uses by joining us
in our classroom. Express what the image of Peace means to you
through simple crafts and materials. You will create your own
special Memoria sculpture that actually looks like stone! Each
student will receive a special memento, courtesy of the Memoria
Project.
FROM MODEL TO MARBLE: SCULPTURE’S POINTING SYSTEM
Franco Minervini
Master stone carver Franco Minervini will teach the pointing
system, which enables stone carvers to accurately create a large
stone replica from smaller plaster or clay models.
MODELING THE HUMAN FIGURE
William Kilpatrick
Renowned New Jersey sculptor William Kilpatrick will demonstrate
modeling the human figure in plastiline and will discuss
techniques for enlarging small models into larger ones for use
in creating monumental sculptures.
EXPRESSING YOUR
FEELING THROUGH ART
Gwen Schneider-Johnsen
Art Therapist Gwen Schneider-Johnsen will lead a hands-on
workshop for families who experienced loss on September 11.
Various media will be used – no experience is necessary. Parents
are encouraged to participate with their children.
MEMORIA JEWELRY WORKSHOP
Cary Roche
Cary Roche, jewelry artist, will conduct a hands on workshop for
families who experienced loss on September 11, 2001. Each
participant will create his or her own piece of unique jewelry
utilizing a "chip" of marble from the Memoria Project monument.
Family participation is encouraged.
SPECIAL EVENTS
SAND SCULPTING ON THE
BEACH
John Gowdy
Award-wining sand sculptor and stone carver John Gowdy will
demonstrate large-scale sand sculpture and create an amazing
tribute to the victims of September 11th in sand! All
participants will then be invited to create their own individual
sand sculpture tributes to September 11th. Come participate in
this special event for children and adults of all ages. Prizes
will be given out to all participants.
