On April 18th, 2002, Stephen Shaheen and Evan Urbania visited Vermont Quarries Corp. of Rutland Vermont to approve and inspect the four raw marble blocks that the company has quarried and donated to the Memoria Project. Luca Mannolini, Manager, took Steve and Evan inside the largest underground quarry in the world. The quarry, which provided the same stone used to create the Lincoln Memorial and The U.S. Supreme Court Building, has been extracting stone for over 100 years. After inspection, the Imperial Danby White Marble was shipped to Granite Industries of Vermont, where it was squared and cut using a large diamond wire saw to create perfectly smooth, geometric blocks. Weighing over 20,000 lbs. each, these blocks became the centerpiece statues of the memorial. |
