| Background
The Memoria Project is an endeavor to create a lasting tribute
to the victims and survivors of September 11th and to enrich all
who come into contact with it in the process. Last winter, local
sculptor Stephen Shaheen, Evan Urbania and William Webber, along
with other community members formed a non-profit group to
oversee the creation of a commemorative stone sculpture. It was
intended to be a project by and for the community of Monmouth
County, which lost 146 persons in the terrorist attacks against
the United States last September. The Project has since grown to
be a national treasure, as regional and international support
was gathered over the last year. The memorial honors and
commemorates ALL the victims of the September 11th, but will
remain here in Monmouth County.
The founders of the Project wanted to make the process of the
memorial’s creation an enriching and educational experience for
local communities. As a result, the administration of Sandy
Hook, part of Gateway National Recreation Area, granted access
to the Memoria Project to create its sculpture out in the open,
where the public could watch and participate.
